Kenneth McPherson

Kenneth McPherson was founding Director of the Indian Ocean Centre from 1981 to 2002 when it closed. He taught at Curtin University and the University of Western Australia, and in 2003 was Mercator Professor at the University of Heidelberg. He is currently a Fellow at the South Asia Institute at the University of Heidelberg, Adjunct Professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne (Australia), Research Fellow at the Western Australian Museum, and President of the Australian Association for Maritime History.

He was a founding member of the Australia-India Council (1992-2002) and Advisor to the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Indian Ocean matters during the same period. He has a particular expertise in international relations and Indian Ocean regional cooperation and has published several books and articles in this field, including The Indian Ocean: A History of The People & The Sea (OUP).
