Helder Carita

Helder Carita is a renowned Portuguese historian and architect who lives and works in Lisbon. He holds a graduate degree in architecture and a Ph.D. in the History of Modern Art - Architecture and Urbanism. Between 2000-2004 he was the Pedagogical Director of the School for Decorative Arts of the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation.

He has published several books and scholarly articles on Portugal’s rich architectural heritage and is especially interested in the conservation of the Portuguese architectural legacy in India. In 1993, the city of Lisbon awarded him the annual historiography prize for his architectural survey of the Bairro Alto quarter. Other published works include books on Manueline Lisbon and the formation of modern urban models, a study of the Santos Palace in Lisbon, Gardens of Portugal and a volume on the Palaces of Goa, which was published in Portuguese, French and English editions. He has also organised numerous exhibitions and worked on several projects documenting historical Portuguese architecture in Portugal and abroad.
